ABSTRACT

This chapter on parenteral nutrition (PN) will prepare the reader on how to manage patients needing nutrition support who are not able to feed enterally. Malnutrition in the hospital is a well-documented phenomenon with a signi˜cant impact on morbidity and mortality. Several past studies have shown malnutrition among hospitalized patients to be as high as 50%–69%, but often goes unrecognized (Butterworth 1974a and 1974b; Weinsier 1979). In spite of improvement in overall nutrition care and assessment techniques, similar rates of malnutrition exist in recently published studies (Baccaro 2009).
