ABSTRACT

Patients diagnosed with short bowel syndrome (SBS) often require parenteral nutrition (PN) and hydration «uids for various periods of time. Often, particularly in the pediatric patient who has not obtained full growth, the shortened length of the gastrointestinal tract is insuf—cient to absorb enough nutrients to fully support growth and development. Adults with SBS may also require «uids by vein to maintain adequate hydration and/or meet caloric needs.
