ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide guidance to researchers who want to develop Raman scattering as a capability in their laboratories, with an emphasis on providing instruction in some of the more advanced methods useful in the study of complex materials, including high-pressure and high-magnetic-eld methods and inelastic x-ray scattering. This chapter also provides a number of examples-aimed at the novice in Raman scattering methodsthat illustrate how electronic, phononic, and magnetic excitations are identied and studied in materials, and how temperature-, magnetic-eld-, and pressure-dependent Raman scattering methods can be used to study the properties of, and phase transitions in, materials. Because the examples shown cannot provide an exhaustive discussion of the broad capabilities of and applications for Raman scattering, we also provide extensive references to help direct those interested in a wider range of examples of Raman scattering in materials.
