ABSTRACT
ZigBee is one of the wireless network technologies which are widely used from the
low power environment. The low cost allows the technology to be widely deployed
in wireless control and monitoring applications, the low power-usage allows longer
life with smaller batteries, and the mesh networking provides high reliability and
larger range. This technology defined by the ZigBee specification is intended to be
simpler and less expensive than other WPAN, such as Bluetooth. ZigBee is targeted
at radio-frequency applications that require a low data rate, long battery life, and se-
cure networking. So it was organized as a very simple structure and offered at a low
price. Current wireless network environment is separating that broadband network
and low speed and low cost network. Therefore ZigBee is one important technology
for low cost wireless networks. ZigBee technology is separated by two parts. First
the application layer designate by ZigBee alliance which is association of compa-
nies. It is defining the network, security and application software layers. Next, the
physical and medium access control layers are making standards by IEEE 802.15.4.
MAC layer was access to wireless channel through CSMA/CA mechanism. Appli-
cation and Network layer had been constituted ZigBee alliance. Application layer is
made up APS (Application Support Sublayer), ZDO (ZigBee Device Object) and ap-
plication framework. Network layer does exchange the information between terminal
nodes. In this chapter, we explain the ZigBee Protocols and IEEE 802.15.4 standards
through three parts. First, It explain about what is ZigBee. ZigBee chapter is included
introduction of ZigBee architecture , application layer, network layer and security. In
