ABSTRACT

Bitemarks may occur on any surface of the body, including the tongue. They may be self-inflicted or inflicted by some other person or animal, including insects. Documentation and interpretation of a bitemark are complex and raise many questions. One such question may pertain to the temporal relation of the bite. Bitemark infliction may have occurred before, at the time of, or after death. In life, the patient may or may not be able to provide an accurate history of the event. It is incumbent upon investigators to gather all circumstantial data and attempt to verify the victim’s account.
