ABSTRACT

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) project entitled “Identifying the Needs of the Forensic Science Community” was created by Congress to provide an independent assessment of the present and future resource needs of the forensic science community and to make recommendations in specific areas [1]. These were to maximize use of technology, identify scientific advances, advise on programs to increase numbers of qualified scientists, disseminate best practices for evidence collection and analysis, and examine the role of forensic science in homeland security, interoperability of automated fingerprint systems, and additional issues as determined by the Committee on Identifying the Needs of the Forensic Sciences Community.
