ABSTRACT
Overthepast50years,thesophisticationofequipmentusedtomeasure nature’sprocesseshasescalated,alongwiththecomputerpoweravailable toanalyzetheresultingdata,allowingscientiststoexploretheroleoforder intheseprocesses.Manyofnature’sprocesses-bothinourbodyandinour naturalandsocialenvironments-havebeenfoundtoconsistofanintermediatebalancebetweenperfectorderandcompletedisorder.Forexample, thehealthyheartisnowknowntohave°uctuationsaroundaperiodicbeat (Goldbergeretal.,2002).Moreover,manyphenomenafeature°uctuations thatoccuracrossmanyfrequencies,wheretheircontributionstotheoverall process follow a power law scaling relationship.
