ABSTRACT
Apoptosis, the programmed cell death, is used to eliminate cells in excess, damaged, or infected and potentially dangerous for the organism. The cells govern their own death, as a consequence of internal molecular signals, leading to a series of events requiring from a few hours to several days to overcome. The apoptotic cells detach from their neighboring cells and are readily phagocyted by macrophages or adjacent cells without generating an inflammatory response.
