ABSTRACT

The term portal is often bandied about throughout the literature and conversation, with little or no consistency. When people talk about portals in the context of information technology, they are almost always referring to some form of Web-based application that aggregates content or information from multiple sources. But do not most Web sites do that already? What do people really mean when they refer to a portal, and what is the merit of focusing on this type of application in a human factors design handbook?
