ABSTRACT

The neuropeptides play a major role in the transmission or modulation of signals in the central and peripheral nervous system (Kastin et al. 1996). They are involved in several neurologic functions, including those related to memory, pain, reward, stress, and food intake. Neuropeptides are released from nerve terminals of peptidergic neurons, and they induce their effects by binding to pre-or postsynaptically located receptors, which are embedded in the nerve cell membrane.
