ABSTRACT

The present economy is structurally changing from an industrial-based nation to an information and knowledge-based global economy causing a new revolution in the nature of work (Hill et al. 2003). Companies' possibilities for flexible and innovative reaction to turbulent business environments are increased by replacing the hierarchical structures for more flexible work models. Physical labor is gradually declining and mentally complex tasks are growing. Rapid improvements and technological innovations and the power and function of new information-and communication tools could make the confidence in the reliability and userfriendliness of the systems grow. This results in an increase of new ICT technologies in many organizations. These new technologies, including video conferencing, collaborative software, internet/intranet systems converge to forge a foundation of the new workplace (Lee and Brand 2005). It causes an increase in possibilities of more flexible arrangements providing employees with new alternatives for where, when and how to accomplish work and reduces the necessity of coming to the office. In many companies acceptability of arrangements enabling flexibility in work, such as flexible working hours, teleworking (working from home or another remote locations), telecommuting and teleconferencing has gained interest (Hill et al. 2003).
