ABSTRACT

Where does “strategic project management” come from? How does it develop? Is it a business practice that one can purchase or study in school? Unfortunately, the term has been loosely applied to everything from multiproject software to courses on how to start a Type 1 project office. Our definition of strategic project management is that it is an evolved practice, closely paralleling the evolution of a business. We can define three stages in this evolution: (1) individual project management, (2) division or department-level project management, and (3) enterprise/corporate-level (which we will call strategic) project management. These three stages correlate to the types of project office (Figure 2.1) briefly described in the Introduction.
