ABSTRACT

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate ester, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), modulate several neurotransmitter systems (Maninger et al. 2009; Pérez-Neri et al. 2008) involved in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders such as depression, dementia, schizophrenia, anxiety, and mania. Some studies have found an association between endogenous DHEA levels and the incidence and course of those mental disorders. Also, several controlled clinical trials have reported bene‰cial effects of DHEA administration.
