ABSTRACT
This entry summarizes the basic observational data from which the structure and the evolution of the Milky Way are determined. It also describes the spatial structure as found in the distributions of stars and interstellar gas and deals with the kinematics of stellar motions. The dynamics of the galaxy as influenced by gravitation is summarized and current research, which is influenced by the studies of other galaxies, is described.
