ABSTRACT

This entry describes how amorphous order–disorder phase-change memory became the enabling technology for digital video disk media, high-density technology developments, and the next-generation phase-change media. The future direction of Ovonic phase-change storage will also be discussed, including the use of ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses for recording at Tbit/sec data rate and a new high data rate Ovonics semiconductor switching memory, the Ovonic Unified Memory.
