ABSTRACT
This entry reviews how digital data are represented in optical data storage. It discusses the properties of modulation codes and examples of some modulation codes. Recent trends in modulation codes are discussed. The error sources in a typical optical data storage system are examined. Examples of some error correction codes are given. Some other practical techniques that can be used to construct powerful error correction coding (ECC) are illustrated. Current focus in ECC research is discussed.
