ABSTRACT

This entry provides a brief overview of the computational and experimental techniques used in light scattering by different scattering systems. Special attention is paid to the backscattering direction. Many researchers have focused on this topic because of both its basic interest (how light interacts with matter) and its important applications in many technological and industrial fields. A review of the most important numerical techniques for obtaining the electromagnetic field scattered by different geometries is introduced. Finally, some examples illustrate how backscattering experiments can provide experimental results that can help to obtain information about the scattering system.
