ABSTRACT

This entry presents an overview of synthetic aperture radar (SAR). It presents examples of SAR images, summarizes the history of SAR, and provides an overview of the fundamental principles underlying SAR imaging. It describes the physical and engineering bases for range and azimuth resolution in SAR imagery, and presents synopses of the key steps in the SAR image formation process. It describes typical military and scientific applications of SAR. This entry is technical in nature, but should be accessible to readers with a general engineering, scientific, or mathematical background.
