ABSTRACT

Evaluation of ecosystem goods and services is necessary if we are to protect the social wealth they provide. To counter the economic invisibility of ecosystem goods and services, natural and social scientists are working together to depict nature’s role in our social and economic well-being. Evaluation requires extensive knowledge of biophysical systems, the ways in which human activity alters those systems, and our ability to infl uence them positively via restoration, management, and protection. It also requires knowledge of nature’s role in our economic and social lives and the value of those goods and services.
