ABSTRACT

Remote sensing is the term used for observing the strength of electromagnetic radiation that is radiated or re¤ected from various objects on the ground level with a sensor installed in a space satellite or in an aircraft. The analysis of acquired data is an effective means to survey vast areas periodically. It is important to classify the surface of the earth into categories as water areas, forests, factories, and cities. In this chapter, we discuss an effective method for land map classi†cation which uses Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type 2 (AVNIR-2) and Neural Network. The sensors installed in the space satellite include optical and microwave sensors. AVNIR-2 , which is a passive-type optical sensor installed in the ALOS, a Japanese satellite, is used for the land map classi†cation in this chapter.
