ABSTRACT

Various methods can be used to evaluate the depth and the expanse of snow cover. Aerial photographs and photogrammetry can provide information on the extent of the snow cover, as well as its distribution, in denuded or lightly wooded mountainous areas. The depth of snow is evaluated by subtracting the height of the soil surface from the height of the snow surface, determined at certain reference points selected before the first snowfall. Topographic surveys make it possible to determine the altitude limit of snows on mountain slopes.
