ABSTRACT

The term cosmeceuticals was ’rst introduced by Reed (1962), with the introduction of science to the development of the cosmetic industry. This concept was further popularized with the discovery of active substances that cannot be considered cosmetics or drugs by Albert Klingman in the late 1970s (Newburger, 2009; Manela-Azulay and Bagatin, 2009). The cosmeceutical, which is the word used to describe these active substances, is derived from the words cosmetic and pharmaceutical. Including the meaning of both words, the word cosmeceutical has been de’ned as cosmetic products having drug-like bene’ts that enhance or protect the appearance or order of the human body (Kim et al., 2008).
