ABSTRACT

In the past 30 years, ultrasound has become a very powerful imaging modality mainly due to its unique temporal resolution, low cost, nonionizing radiation, and portability. Lately, unique features such as harmonic imaging, three-dimensional visualization, transducer micromachining, elasticity imaging, and the use of contrast agents have added to the higher quality and wider applications of diagnostic ultrasound images. In this chapter, a short overview of the fundamentals of diagnostic ultrasound and a brief summary of its many applications and methods are provided.
