ABSTRACT

The entry describes technologies for automatic identification and data capture (AIDC). These are taking on additional significance in retail supply chains as retailers are experimenting and sometimes demanding manufactures to adopt the technology. Descriptions are provided for barcodes, RFID, and in‐transit tracking. Cases include Proctor & Gamble's Gillette subsidiary and its used of RFID. A collaboration among three technology providers provides a vision for total path tracking of merchandise.
