ABSTRACT

The entry describes the elements needed to improve operations—total productive maintenance (TPM), continuous improvement, the focused factory, simplification, and standardization. TPM focuses on improving production equipment to make it more efficient, reliable, and flexible. Continuous improvement uses goal setting to get all employees involved in making the production system more efficient. The focused factory is a “factory in the factory.” It consists of an entire manufacturing system for a defined product, production technology, or market. Simplification and standardization of products and processes eliminate waste and bring consistency to operating processes.
