ABSTRACT: The surgical management of benign and malignant nodular thyroid disease can now be performed under locoregional anesthesia and with same-day discharge. Newer anesthetic agents and locoregional block types (superˆcial cervical plexus, deep cervical plexus, and anterior neck ˆeld) are reviewed. Concerns that have traditionally precluded same-day surgery are now better addressed with new hemostasis technologies, intraoperative parathyroid hormone assays, and improved methods for patient selection.
