ABSTRACT

This chapter’s project (see Section 4) is a hat in which

the body is knitted onto the side edge of the brim by

picking up stitches.

The mathematician will probably be satisfied to be as-

sured that a method exists for creating a new row of

knit stitches between two columns of stitches, so that

work can proceed in a perpendicular direction. How-

ever, the knitter wishes to know how to execute the

method. These instructions are given for right-handed

knitters; the left-handed knitter should refer to Chap-

ter 4 for help in translating the instructions.
