ABSTRACT

Valley knew Bob Robertson well enough to know that he was no hysteric and that his dramatic outburst was not scary hyperbole. During the war they had worked together and had come to know one another well on OSRD assignments in London. Robertson was head of the scientifi c intelligence team that focused on the German V-2 rocket problem. He and Guy Stever were famous for their techno expedition off the beachheads at Normandy, following directly behind advancing troops to locate what rocket technology they could at V-1 and V-2 sites in France and Belgium.2 Radically changed by his wartime experiences, Robertson stayed on in Europe well into 1946 working as chief scientifi c advisor for the Supreme Allied Command . Later, returning to teaching at Princeton, he continued government work as technology advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff , was instrumental in setting up the Weapons Systems Evaluation Group for the Secretary of Defense, and then served as its fi rst director. If there was anyone well grounded about the extent of the Soviet threat, it was Bob.
