ABSTRACT
Nine and five have special significance in the luoshu; nine represents the total number of cells in the luoshu array, and the number five occupies the important central position in the square. These same two numbers figure prominently in Chinese geography, cosmology, and metaphysics. Early Chinese writings are filled with references to groups of nine objects and many Chinese classifications are based on five.
