ABSTRACT

In 1780, 10-year-old Leonhard Euler, the son of Karl Euler, said to his 73-year-old grandfather Leonhard Euler , “Grandfather, you didn’t live in St. Petersburg when you were a boy, did you?”

“No, I grew up far from St. Petersburg,” the renowned mathematician said. “I am a native of Basel in the Helvetian Confederation . I grew up in the village of Riehen , an hour’s walk outside of Basel.”
