Follicular thyroid epithelium can give rise to differentiated and undifferentiated carcinomas. Differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) includes the papillary and follicular histotypes and their variants that account for more than 80% of all thyroid cancers. Undifferentiated (or anaplastic) thyroid cancer is still derived from the follicular epithelium but is characterized by the almost complete loss of thyroid differentiation. Frequently, it can arise on the background of preexisting papillary or follicular carcinoma. The undifferentiated type accounts for about 5% of thyroid carcinomas.
