ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The central aim of this chapter is to present an overview of soft computing techniques designed for automatic drug infusion and modeling of patient response in the ambient assisted living environment. The advantages and limitations of automatic drug infusion systems are analyzed. In order to present the algorithms and concepts behind the patient response problem, across this chapter, special emphasis is given to the specific medical condition of hypertension. A brief description of the evolution of these systems, the identification of the most recent advances, and research trends are also provided. The specificities related to the implementation of medical systems in assisted living environments are analyzed, and possible solutions are suggested. The everyday usage of these systems in more familiar, nonhospital environments is discussed from an assisted living perspective.
