N-Acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) methyl α-glycoside (3) and its O-acetylated derivative (2) are valuable intermediates for preparation of a variety of sialic acid analogues.1 In addition, methyl sialoside 3 is a useful reference compound in biochemical studies,2a-c and also can be used for probing of carbohydrate-binding proteins.2d,e
