ABSTRACT

The interaction of drugs and nutrition is an extremely important component of clinical monitoring of patients (Santos and Boullata 2005). The number of drugs used in the critical care setting has increased recently, and early use of nutrition support is a reasonable standard for the critically ill patient. This creates an environment for many possible clinically signicant drug-nutrient interactions. This chapter will address the clinically signicant drug-nutrient interactions that may occur in the critical care setting. There are several clinically signicant drug-nutrient interactions (e.g., grapefruit juice and many drugs metabolized by the CYP3A4 enzyme) that would likely not occur in the critical care setting, so they will not be addressed in this chapter.
