ABSTRACT

Wounds originate from a variety of sources. Burns, surgery, infectious disease, trauma, toxic epidermal necrolysis, radiation therapy, decubiti, diabetes, or vascular ulcers are only a few of the many causes of tissue destruction. Normal progression of tissue repair requires conditions that maximize vascular sufciency, aseptic state, immunity, and nutritional balance. This chapter focuses on the metabolic alterations produced by burns and wounds, the nutritional components of tissue repair, methods for assessment of nutritional adequacy, and therapeutic modalities that enhance anabolism, and thus, the promotion of healing.
