ABSTRACT
Heart disease continues to remain the leading cause of mortality in the United States.1 It is anticipated that the number of persons with heart failure will increase due to longer life expectancy and better treatment of heart failure.2 Average length of stay in a hospital is 4.6 days,1 but the length of stay and therefore hospital costs rise dramatically if critical illness develops.
