ABSTRACT

The viral genus Ebola virus or Ebola is the causative agent of Ebola hemorrhagic fever. Ebola was originally recognized in 1976 near the Ebola River Valley in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In March 2002, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) changed the Filovirus genus to the Filoviridae family with two specic genera: Ebola virus and Marburg virus (ICTV 2002). Currently, there are ve recognized Ebola virus species: Zaire ebolavirus (ZEBOV) was the rst to be recognized when in 1976, a schoolteacher developed symptoms initializing resembling malaria that are now well-characterized symptoms of rapid onset of fever, malaise, muscle pain, headache, and later vomiting, diarrhea, and over a maculopapular rash with bleeding at need sites and bodily orices (Isaacson et al. 1977).
