ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will describe the differences between the traditional approach to inventory management and the approach taken by Lean.

Is this chapter really necessary in a book about Lean? Contrary to popular belief, inventory management is still very necessary within most Lean environments. Why? In spite of our best efforts, inventory will still be present in even the best value streams. Can you think of any manufacturing environment that could operate with no inventory at all? If not, then inventory management will be necessary. It is thus important to put the proper procedures and controls in place to make sure that the inventory that is present is truly needed for the operation to function well.
