ABSTRACT

Three fundamental limitations can be identi‰ed that apply to planar imaging with both X-rays and gamma rays from radionuclides (see Chapter 10).

(i) Superimposition

The ‰nal image is a two-dimensional representation of an inhomogeneous three-dimensional object with many planes superimposed. In X-ray imaging the image relates to the distribution of attenuation coef‰cients in the different planes through which the X-ray beam passes.
