ABSTRACT
Lord Kelvin (1824-1907), who is probably best remembered for the absolute thermodynamic scale of temperature, is reported to have stated on one occasion: ‘Anything that cannot be expressed in numbers is valueless’. In view of the potentially harmful effect of X-rays it is particularly important that methods should be available to ‘express in numbers’ the ‘strength’ or intensity of X-ray beams.
