ABSTRACT

Femoral neck fractures account for 50% of hip fractures and are common in the elderly beyond the age of 70 years. About 80% of neck fractures occur in women, and the incidence doubles every 5-6 years in women above the age of 30 years. The incidence in younger patients is low and is associated mainly with high-energy trauma. Risk factors include female sex, increasing age, poor health, tobacco and alcohol use, a previous fracture and a low oestrogen level.
