ABSTRACT
The bony spinal column is the central element of the axial trunk; it is responsible for protection of the enclosed neural elements and the paradoxically dual role of trunk flexibility and trunk stability. Pathological states that compromise any or all of these three major tasks will reduce the patient’s overall ability to function.
