ABSTRACT

Intestinal transplantation is a relatively new procedure. As the largest lymphoid organ in the body, transplantation of the intestine presents a significant challenge for immunosuppression. Following animal experiments in the 1960s, notably by Lillehei, and later by Grant, who subsequently performed the first successful liver-intestinal transplant, increasing experience with the procedure has been reported. Deltz reported the first successful longterm small bowel transplant in an adult patient in 1988. In recent years, survival following intestinal transplantation has shown a steadily increasing trend.
