ABSTRACT

Wilms’ is the most common solid abdominal tumor of childhood and in 90 percent of cases presents as a painless mass in a well child. The annual incidence in children under 15 years of age is 7-10 cases per million, being 6-7 percent of all childhood cancers. Eighty percent of cases are diagnosed before five years of age and 6 percent present with bilateral disease. With modern treatment protocols, combining chemotherapy, surgery, and selective use of radiotherapy, 85 percent of children can expect long-term survival. Management is by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, pediatricians, and specialist nurses.
