ABSTRACT

Applications of virtual environments (VEs) have become increasingly interactive, allowing the user not only to look around a 3D world but also to navigate the space, select and manipulate virtual objects, and give commands to the system. Thus, it is crucial that researchers, developers, and designers understand the issues related to 3D interfaces and interaction techniques. In this chapter, the space of possible interaction techniques for several common tasks is explored, and guidelines for their use in VE applications are offered. These guidelines are drawn largely from empirical research results.
