ABSTRACT

The decentralization of the production sites, as well as the relevant specialization, has made freight transportation in the so-called distributed logistic chains (DLC). The transportation system can be defined as the set of elements of a considered area that interact with each other, both generating the travel demand and providing the services for its satisfaction. The growing attention to environmental problems is attracting more and more attention to all the possible interventions that can mitigate the impact of passenger and freight transportation. The first element of the transportation system to consider is the transportation supply system. It consists of all the elements that make the mobility of people and goods possible such as: the structures and facilities, such as roads, parking spaces and railway lines, the services, such as transit lines and the relevant timetables, the regulations, that is, road circulation and parking regulations, and the prices, that is, the transit fares, the parking prices and the road tolls.
