ABSTRACT

This entry examines the adoption of Managing for Results (MFR) reforms in U.S. state governments. MFR reforms have been adopted in all states, and involve the creation and dissemination of performance information, with the hope that such information will inform public decision making. MFR has been popular for a variety of reasons, including its power as a political symbol. There is now unprecedented performance information about state governments. At this point, the main challenge for public officials is to find ways to ensure that this information is used.
