ABSTRACT
Geographic information systems (GIS) are powerful analytical tools that facilitate decision making through visualization of interactive maps over a computer screen. It is one of the most widely used applications in local government providing policy analysts new capabilities of communicating and disseminating information to stakeholders and elected officials. The entry provides an overview of GIS and its implications for public policy.
