ABSTRACT

This entry describes the current performance management framework for the U.S. federal government, which is centered around the GPRA Modernization Act of 2010. The current approach has been finalized after 20 years of experimentation with different approaches, including the original Government Performance and Results Act and the Bush-era Program Assessment Raring Tool. The key challenges facing this new framework are to induce a shift from producing performance information to using it to make decisions; to fit the performance framework with the reality of the networked approach to delivering public services; and, to make strategic choices in the context of tightening budgets.
