ABSTRACT
This entry defines transparency as the disclosure of information by an organization that enables external actors to monitor and assess its internal workings and performance. The evolvement of transparency is discussed, as are conceptual tools to distinguish several forms and types of transparency. Further, the potential benefits and risks of government transparency are elaborated. The entry concludes with a discussion of future research and recommended readings for prospective students and scholars.
